Motivational speaker and author Stephen Covey, whose “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People” sold millions of copies, died Monday in an Idaho hospital.

He was 79.

Covey‘s family said in a statement he died at Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls from residual effects of a bicycle accident he had in April, CNN reported.

“In his final hours, he was surrounded by his loving wife and each one [of] his children and their spouses, just as he always wanted,” the family statement said.

“The 7 Habits of Highly Successful People” has been called one of the most influential management books by several organizations.

Other best-sellers by Covey include “First Things First,” “Principle-Centered Leadership,” and “The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness.”

Covey earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Utah, a master‘s in business administration from Harvard and a doctorate from Brigham Young University, his biography said. He also received several honorary doctorate degrees.

He founded Covey Leadership Center, which merged with Franklin Quest in 1997 to create FranklinCovey Co., a global consulting and leadership training firm.

Covey and his wife, Sandra, lived in Provo, Utah, his biography on Wikipedia.org said. A father of nine and a grandfather of 52, he received the Fatherhood Award from the National Fatherhood Initiative in 2003.

<성공하는 사람들의 일곱 가지 습관>이라는 베스트셀러 자기계발서로 유명한 작가이자 강연자인 스티븐 코비가 아이다호의 한 병원에서 숨을 거뒀다.

코비의 가족들은 성명 발표를 통해 코비가 4월에 있었던 자전거 사고의 후유증으로 사망했다고 밝혔다.

그뿐 아니라 그는 <소중한 것을 먼저 하라>, <원칙 중심의 리더십>, <성공하는 사람들의 여덟 번째 습관> 등 대형 베스트셀러들을 썼다.

그의 전기에  따르면 코비는 유타 대학교에서 경영학학사, 하버드 대학교에서 경영학 석사를, 그리고 브리검영 대학교에서 박사학위를 받았다. 뿐만 아니라 그는 여러 명예 박사 학위를 수여받았다.

그는 프랭클린 퀘스트와 합병해 글로벌 컨설팅과 리더십 트레이닝 회사인 코비 리더십 센터를 세웠다.

코비와 그의 부인인 산드라는 유타 주의 프로보에 살았으며, 아홉 명의 아버지이자 52명의 할아버지였던 그는 2003년 미국 아버지모임에서 좋은 아버지상을 수여한 바 있다.
