A Seoul court issued Tuesday an arrest warrant for President Lee Myung-bak’s elder brother on charges of taking bribes from savings bank executives.

Former ruling party lawmaker Lee Sang-deuk became the first-ever sibling of an incumbent president to be arrested.

Clients of failed savings banks threw water and eggs at his face when the 77-year-old politician arrived at the Seoul Central District Court at 10:30 a.m.

The prosecution questioned Lee last Thursday over allegations that he took 300 million won ($262,000) in kickbacks from Solomon Savings Bank chief Lim Suk in 2007 and received 150 million won from Kolon Group, which he once chaired before entering politics.

Prosecutors are looking into whether the money was put into election campaign funding for the president.

Authorities also requested the parliamentary consent on the arrest of Saenuri lawmaker Rep. Chung Doo-un for colluding with Lee in the case.

Chung turned out not only to have been at the scene but also to have loaded the money into his car, according to officials.

Chung’s arrest is to be put to vote in the plenary session on Wednesday afternoon.

Under the current law, lawmakers hold their immunity from detention while the parliament is in session. But major parties pledged to give up such privileges.

이명박 대통령의 친형인 이상득(77) 새누리당 전 의원이 결국 영어(囹圄)의 몸이 됐다.

이 전 의원은 10일 밤 법원으로부터 구속영장 발부 소식이 전해지고 40여분 뒤인 11일 0시21분께 검찰 수사관들에게 이끌려 서울 서초동 대검찰청 청사 1층에 모습을 드러냈다.

그는 전날 오후 12시27분께 법원에서 영장실질심사를 마친 뒤 외부와 차단된 법 원 내 체포 피의자용 통로를 통해 대검 청사로 옮겨와서는 거의 12시간을 기다려야 했다.

앞서 저축은행 피해자들에게는 넥타이를 잡히고 계란을 맞을 뻔한 봉변을 당한 뒤였다.

청사 밖으로 나온 이 전 의원의 표정은 착잡했다.

이 전 의원은 '대통령을 위해 받은 돈이냐'라는 취재진의 물음에 입을 떼지 않았다.

'대통령에게 한마디 해달라'고 요청하자 이 전 의원은 그제야 얼굴을 돌아보며 "죄송합니다"라고 짧게 답했다.

이어 '국민적 이목이 집중된 사건인 만큼 국민들에게도 한마디 해달라'는 요청에도 그는 "죄송합니다"라는 말만 남겼다.

그 뒤로는 입을 굳게 다물었다.

이 전 의원이 수사관들과 함께 미리 대기한 차량까지 가는 동안은 보좌관이 침울한 얼굴로 우산을 받쳐 들고 뒤를 따랐다.

비가 내리는 와중에도 취재진 수십 명이 이 전 의원의 뒤를 따라붙었다. 검찰 직원, 비서진까지 뒤엉키면서 한때 소란이 벌어졌고 촬영장비가 바닥에 떨어지기도 했다.

이 전 의원은 법정에 출석할 때와 마찬가지로 불편한 기색을 비추기도 했다.

이윽고 0시23분께 이 전 의원은 검은색 쏘나타 차량 뒷좌석에 간신히 몸을 실었다.

이 전 의원이 탄 차량은 1분가량 카메라 플래시 세례를 받고 나서 빗속을 천천히 달려 서울구치소로 떠났다.
