Robin van Persie's Arsenal career appears to be over after the Dutch forward announced Wednesday he will not be extending his contract with the Gunners.

Van Persie said he held talks about his future with Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis and manager Arsene Wenger before the European Championship “but ... it has again become clear to me that we in many aspects disagree on the way Arsenal should move forward.”

“I've thought long and hard about it, but I have decided not to extend my contract,” Van Persie, the club's captain and top scorer last season, wrote on his official website.

The 28-year-old, who has one year left on his contract, said more meetings were planned with Arsenal once Gazidis returned from vacation in the United States.

A number of leading European clubs are thought to be interested in Van Persie, including English champion Manchester City and Italian champion Juventus.

Van Persie carried the London club at times last season, scoring 37 goals in all competitions _ including a Premier League-high 30 _ as Arsenal qualified for the Champions League. However, he endured a poor Euro 2012 by his high standards, scoring one goal as the Netherlands exited at the group stage.

He moved to Arsenal from Dutch club Feyenoord in 2004 but the club hasn't won a trophy since 2005.

“I personally have had a great season but my goal has been to win trophies with the team and to bring the club back to its glory days,” Van Persie said.

Perhaps with the departure of Van Persie in mind, Wenger has signed two strikers _ Olivier Giroud from Montpellier and Lukas Podolski from Cologne _ in the offseason. (AP)

판 페르시 이적? 박주영 출전시간 늘어나나…

글랜드 프리미어리그 아스널의 '간판 골잡이'로빈 판 페르시(29)가 아스널 유니폼을 벗는다.

판 페르시는 자신의 홈페이지를 통해 "오랫동안 고심한 끝에 아스널과 계약을 연장하지 않겠다고 결심했다"고 5일 밝혔다.

지난 시즌 프리미어리그 정규리그 30골로 득점왕에 오른 판 페르시는 유럽축구 선수권대회 전부터 아르센 벵거 감독와 구단주와 함께 거취 문제를 두고 대화를 해왔다.

개인 성적은 좋았지만 팀이 무관에 그치자 고심한 데 따른 것으로 풀이된다.

판 페르시는 "지난 시즌 내 성적은 좋았지만 내 골은 팀에 우승 트로피를  안기지 못했다"고 아쉬움을 털어놓은 뒤 "감독과 선수들, 팬을 존경하지만 아스널에서 계속 해나가기엔 구단과 의견이 맞지 않는다"며 재계약 거부 의사를 밝혔다. 

아스널은 2003-2004 프리미어리그 정규리그 우승과 2004-2005 잉글랜드 축구협회(FA)컵 우승 이후 한 번도 정상을 탈환하지 못했다.

게다가 최근 수년간 사미르 나스리와 가엘 클리쉬, 세스크 파브레가스, 에마뉘엘 아데바요르 등 팀의 핵심 선수들까지 떠나 전력 누수가 심했다.

이번 여름 이적 시장을 앞두고 판 페르시만은 절대 내주지 않겠다던 벵거 감독이었지만 결국 판 페르시마저 팀을 떠나게 됐다.

한편 판 페르시에 이적에 따라 지난 시즌 얼굴을 보기 힘들었던 박주영(27)이 출전 기회를 늘릴 수 있을지 귀추가 주목된다.

아스널은 지난달 공식 홈페이지을 통해 박주영에 대해 "볼턴을 상대로 멋진 골을 넣었지만 판 페르시의 맹활약에 밀려 리그 출전 기회를 잡기가 어려웠다"고 평했다.
