Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled the world’s largest refrigerator on Wednesday, in its latest move to jump-start demand for its home appliance products amid a global economic slump.

The Zipel T-9000 features a 900-liter storage space, the world’s biggest among household models, and a triple cooling system which optimizes humidity and temperature, the company said.

The fridge is also equipped with wider shelves and extra compartments designed for enhanced storage, it said.

The introduction of the new model is part of Samsung’s efforts to bolster its consumer electronics unit as a global economic slump is eating into demand for electronics products.

“The TV market has shrunk a bit. But the home appliance market is growing around 5-6 percent and Samsung Electronics is growing more,” said Yoon Boo-keun, head of the company’s consumer electronics division.

Yoon said the company will strive to become a top performer in the global home appliance market by launching innovative products such as the Zipel T-9000.

Meanwhile, the division chief said the consumer electronics unit is likely to post better-than-expected earnings.

Samsung Electronics is set to release its second-quarter earnings estimate on Friday.

Analysts estimate the company is likely to post a record operating profit of 6.7 trillion won ($5.9 billion), compared with 5.8 trillion won in the January-March period.
