French scientists Tuesday found that Coca-Cola and Pepsi contain trace amounts of alcohol.

The Paris-based National Institute of Consumption tested 19 colas, and the result revealed that 10 of them contained alcohol. The alcohol-free colas were cheap supermarket versions.

However, the study said that the amount of alcohol was not enough for someone to violate the drink-drive limit because the alcohol level was 0.001 percent. One would need to consume 1300 cans to reach that limit, according to the researchers.

Coca-Cola said that it was possible for its product to contain alcohol during the production of its secret recipe. Pepsi also acknowledged the study’s results, saying the existence of alcohol was possible because of ingredients they used. However, Pepsi emphasized that its recipe did not contain alcohol.

Both of them suggested that natural fruit fermenting can produce a small amount of alcohol.

콜라에 알코올이 들어있다?

코카 콜라와 펩시 콜라에 알코올이 함유되어 있다는 연구결과가 발표 돼 충격을 주고 있다.

프랑스 국립 소비연구소는 19개의 콜라 음료를 가지고 테스트를 한 결과 10개의 콜라 음료에서 알코올이 나왔다고 전했다.

하지만 함유된 알코올의 양이 0.001 퍼센트의 극소량이기 때문에 음주운전에는 큰 영향을 주지 않는다고 했다.

이에 대해 코카콜라는 외부에 알려지지 않은 제조과정에 따라 알코올이 들어갈 가능성이 있음을 인정했고 펩시콜라 또한 제조에 사용되는 재료에 알코올이 함유 돼 있을 가능성이 있다고 밝혔지만 제조법에는 포함되지 않는다고 밝혔다.

두 회사는 제품에 들어가는 과일을 발효하는 과정에서도 알코올이 생길 수 있다고 말했다.
