A city employee in Yuma, Ariz., suffered a broken back and internal injuries when a large saguaro cactus fell on him as he worked on a water leak.

William Mason remained in intensive care Thursday at Yuma Regional Medical Center, two days after the accident, the Yuma Daily Sun reported.

"We'll have to see how the surgery goes to learn the extent of his injuries. It was a horrible accident," Caroline Ashley, Mason's mother-in-law, told the newspaper. "He's in very serious condition. We don't even know if he will live. We're all praying for him."

Ashley said Mason also suffered a broken leg and 146 cactus spines had been removed from his body.

Mason, 40, a water distribution technician, and other members of a crew were working on a leak when the 14-foot cactus tipped over on him. Full-grown saguaros weigh from 3,200 to 4,800 pounds and are held in place by a network of shallow roots, anchored by a single deep tap root. (UPI)

지난 화요일, 미국 아리조나 유마에서 거대한 사와로 선인장이 사람 위로 떨어지는 사고가 발생했다.

아리조나 유마의 배수시설 기술자인 윌리엄 메이슨은 근무 중 자기 위로 떨어진 5미터짜리 사와로 선인장에 맞아 등뼈가 부러지는 등 심각한 부상을 입고 현재 병원에서 집중 치료를 받고 있다.

윌리엄의 가족에 따르면 현재 윌리엄은 심각한 상태에 있고 의료진이 몸에서 146개의 선인장 가시를 제거했다고 한다.

40세의 윌리엄은 사고 당시 다른 동료들과 물이 누출되는 것을 고치고 있었다고 한다.

사와로 선인장은 미국 남서부 지역에 많이 분포돼 있는데 내부에 들어있는 물의 양에 따라 무게가 수백 킬로그램이나 되는 종도 있는 것으로 알려졌다.
