A seven-year sentence given to a sex offender has been lengthened to ten years after a year-long struggle on the part of the female victim.

Josie Ottoway, 21, was raped nearby her student dormitory in February 2011 by a hooded stranger at gunpoint. The Loughborough University undergraduate studying international business was reportedly on her way back to her room from a friend’s house, which was ten minutes away.

The attacker ordered her to take off her clothes before he sexually assaulted her.

“Once someone points a gun in your face you just do as they say,” Josie said, recalling the incident. “I’m a strong person and know how to defend myself, but it didn’t cross my mind that I could fight back.”

The attacker, Adam Willis, was identified by police a few days later when CCTV images were linked to the semen found on the victim’s dress.

Willis’s initial prison term was lengthened when the case was referred to the appellate court by Attorney General Dominic Grieve earlier this year.

Police never found the weapon wielded by Willis, which he later claimed was a “toy.”

“I didn’t want to go through my life feeling like a victim,” Josie said. “We’re expected to hide away as if we’re in some way responsible.”

Josie chose not to hide her identity from the public saying she wanted to encourage more women to report attacks.

여대생, 기숙사 앞에서 성폭행 당해

여대생을 성폭행한 혐의로 징역 7년을 선고받았던 성폭행범이 검찰총장의 개입으로 인해 징역 10년형을 재선고 받게 되었다고 현지 언론이 지난 토요일 보도했다.

영국 잉글랜드 레스터셔 카운티에 위치한 러브퍼러대학 국제경영학과 학생 조시 오토웨이(Josie Ottoway, 22)는 2011년 2월 자신이 사는 학부 기숙사 앞에서 후드를 쓴 남성에 의해 성폭행을 당했다.

피해자 오토웨이는 당시 10분 거리인 친구의 집에 갔다가 저녁 10시 30분께 기숙사로 돌아가는 길이었다.

성폭행범은 골목길을 지나던 오토웨이를 멈춰 세운 후 총을 겨눈 채 옷을 벗도록 강요해 성폭행했다.

그는 “신고하면 다시 찾아오겠다”고 협박한 후 사라졌으나, 며칠 후 피해자 옷에 묻은 정액과 감시카메라 장면 등의 증거로 인해 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

가해자로 드러난 아담 윌리스(Adam Willis, 21)는 유죄를 인정하여 징역 7년을 선고받았으나 지난 1월 검찰청장의 상고로 징역 10년 형으로 늘어났다.

오토웨이는 익명권을 사양한 것에 대해 더 많은 여성들이 성폭행 피해에 대해 자유롭게 말할 수 있었으면 좋겠다는 뜻을 밝혔다.

그녀는 “성폭행 피해자들은 마치 잘못을 한 듯 조용히 숨어살아야 한다고 생각하는데 그렇지 않다”고 말했다.
