Two Iranians have been sentenced to death for drinking alcohol, the head of the judiciary in the north-eastern province of Khorassan Razavin said on Sunday.

"Two people who have for the third time been convicted of consuming alcoholic drinks have been sentenced to death," ISNA news agency quoted Hassan Shariati as saying. "The death sentence will be effected as soon as it is confirmed by the Supreme Court."

Murder, rape, armed robbery and trafficking of drugs in quantities in excess of five kilogrammes are among crimes punishable by death in Iran.

Alcohol consumption is strictly prohibited in Iran where alcoholic drinks are found on the black market. (DPA)

이란에서 사형에 처해질 수 있는 범죄에는 살인, 강간, 무장 강도, 마약 밀매 등이 포함된다. 이란은 또한 알코올 섭취를 금하고 있으며 알코올은 암시장에서 거래되는 것으로 알려졌다.
