Only one goal counted, and it belonged to Wayne Rooney.

The England striker returned from a two-match suspension to head in the lone goal Tuesday and give his team a 1-0 win over Ukraine and a spot in the European Championship quarterfinals. The co-host Ukrainians, however, will leave the tournament knowing that things could have been different.

Needing a win to advance, the Ukrainians thought they had equalized in the 62nd minute when Marko Devic's looping shot appeared to cross the line before it was hooked clear by England defender John Terry. But the goal was not awarded by the referee or his extra assistant, who was half-standing on the field only a few meters from the post.

“The goal that wasn't given really changed our plan because if it was given, I think the whole game could have looked another way,” Ukraine captain Andriy Shevchenko said through an interpreter. “We tried to give Ukraine a gift but we weren't able to do it.”

Although a draw still would have eliminated them, the equalizer would have given the team hope knowing that another goal would put Ukraine through to the quarterfinals.

“I was sad because the ball was in the goal by one meter,” Ukraine coach Oleg Blokhin said.

The controversey will likely add to the pressure on UEFA President Michel Platini to reverse his opposition to goal-line technology.

It was Rooney, however, who did manage to put his team on the scoreboard.

England captain Steven Gerrard whipped a cross into the penalty area that glanced off two defenders before Ukraine goalkeeper Andriy Pyatov let it slip through his hands as he crouched to collect the ball. Rooney was primed at the far post and made it count. (AP)

<유로2012> 잉글랜드•프랑스 8강 합류

잉글랜드와 프랑스가 2012 유럽축구선수권대회(유로2012) D조 최종전에서 8강 대열에 마지막으로 합류했다.

잉글랜드는 20일(이하 한국시간) 우크라이나 도네츠크 돈바스아레나에서 열린 대회 조별리그 최종전에서 우크라이나를 1-0으로 꺾고 조1위(2승1무)로 8강에 올라 이탈리아와 준결승 진출을 다투게 됐다. 

프랑스는 같은 시간 우크라이나 키예프 올림픽경기장에서 열린 스웨덴과의 경기 에서 0-2로 일격을 당했으나 1승1무1패의 전적으로 조 2위를 차지해 마지막 8강행 티켓을 차지했다.

이로써 대회 8강전은 잉글랜드-이탈리아, 스페인-프랑스, 체코-포르투갈, 독일- 그리스의 격돌로 압축됐다. 공동 개최국인 우크라이나와 폴란드는 모두 8강행이 좌절됐다. 

8강 티켓 마지막 2장이 걸린 D조 최종전은 1~3위팀인 프랑스, 잉글랜드, 우크라이나의 승점 차가 1점에 불과해 예측 불허의 격전 양상으로 전개됐다. 어느 팀이든 패배는 곧 탈락으로 이어질 수 있기 때문에 살얼음판 위의 공방이 이어졌다.

무승부만으로도 준준결승 진출이 가능했던 잉글랜드는 반드시 승리해야 하는 우크라이나를 맞아 전반전 내내 수세에 몰렸으나 후반 3분만에 선제 결승골을 터뜨리며 경기 흐름을 단숨에 뒤집었다.

지역예선전 퇴장으로 2경기 출전금지 끝에 처음 출전한 스트라이커 웨인 루니가 행운의 선제골을 안겼다. 

미드필더 스티븐 제라드가 오른쪽에서 올린 크로스가 수비와 골키퍼 손을 스치며 흐르는 것을 문전으로 달려들던 루니가 머리로 가볍게 밀어 넣어 골망을  흔들었 다.

우크라이나는 홈 관중의 응원을 등에 업고 경기를 지배했으나 전반전 승기를 살 리지 못한데다 골운이 따르지 않아 8강 문턱에서 고배를 들었다.

우크라이나는 후반 들어 무릎부상으로 선발에서 제외됐던 노장 스트라이커 셉첸 코를 투입하며 승부수를 던졌지만, 수비 인원을 늘리면서 점수 지키기에 돌입한 잉글랜드의 수비벽을 넘지 못했다.

후반 17분 역습 상황에서 마르코 데비치가 골키퍼를 제치고 문전으로 차올린 공 이 잉글랜드 수비수 존 테리가 걷어내기 전에 골라인을 넘은 듯했으나 골로 인정받지 못해 아쉬움이 컸다.

프랑스는 2패로 예선탈락이 확정된 스웨덴을 맞아 낙승이 예상됐으나 스웨덴의 투지에 밀려 무기력한 경기를 펼친 끝에 대회 첫 패배를 맛봤다.

스웨덴은 즐라탄 이브라히모비치가 후반 9분에 선제골을 뽑은 데 이어 후반 추가시간에 세바스티안 라르손이 쐐기골을 터뜨려 2-0 완승으로 8강행 좌절의 설움을 달랬다.
