The ruling Saenuri Party will add its weight to the calls for the release of South Korean human rights activist Kim Young-hwan from the custody of China’s Ministry of State Security.

“The party’s opinion that the Chinese authorities should release Kim Young-hwan soon will be delivered to the Chinese Embassy,” Saenuri Party spokesman Lee Sang-il said Wednesday.

According to Lee, Saenuri Party lawmakers including Yoo Ki-june called for the South Korean government to summon the Chinese ambassador to facilitate matters.

Kim, a former pro-North Korean movement leader who turned to promoting human rights in North Korea in the 1990s, was arrested by Chinese authorities in Dalian, Liaoning province on March 29 along with three other South Koreans.

They are detained under charges of causing “damage to state security,” and only Kim has been allowed to meet with the South Korean consulate general in China.
