High 1 Resort is undergoing final preparations to host the International Ski Federation’s congress at the Kangwonland Convention Hotel in Gangwon Province from May 27 through June 2.

About 1,500 people from 110 countries will gather at the 48th International Ski Congress, one of the largest winter sports-related events.

It will be the first time the FIS congress is held in Asia.

As most of the participants of the congress will be foreigners, High 1 Resort is designing the events and banquets during the congress so that they meet foreign tastes. The resort staff are also checking for possible foreign language errors in signboards and promotional videos.

The Kangwonland Convention Hotel, which will be the main venue of the congress, offers easy access to leisure facilities such as a casino, ski slopes, a golf course and condos in addition to facilities for conventions, banquets and accommodation.

The new convention-oriented five-star hotel opened earlier this year. It will contain a state-of-the-art meeting area, which will serve as an excellent location for the congress.

The FIS became an opportunity to open the first large convention center in Gangwon Province when most of the country’s international convention facilities so far were in Seoul, Busan or Jeju Island, raising hopes for further development of Korea’s convention industry.

“We are doing our best to prepare programs that combine the company’s leisure infrastructure such as the ski slopes, golf course and casino with the convention,” said Choi Hung-jib, chief executive of Kangwon Land Inc. which runs High 1 Resort.

“High 1 is a latecomer in the convention industry, but we will make a difference by making good use of the natural environment, tourist attractions and the resort.”

Kangwonland won 15 out 16 votes in a competition of seven nations at the 46th International Ski Congress held in Helsinki, Finland, in 2008.

Established in 1924, the FIS sets ski and snowboarding game rules, selects the host city for World Ski Championships and holds related seminars.
