Artist's tiny Titanic made from toothpick

A San Francisco artist has marked the 100th anniversary of the Titanic's sinking by creating a model of the doomed liner from a single toothpick.

Stephen J. Backman told the Los Angeles Times he believes his replica is the world's smallest Titanic, or at least the smallest one made from a toothpick. The model is 1 5/8 inches from bow to stern -- the original was 882 feet, 6 inches -- but contains significant amounts of detail.

Backman said the first step was to take the toothpick apart.

"I cut it up into paper-thin pieces and then re-glue the toothpick back together," he told the Times in a phone interview Thursday.

Backman, who made his first toothpick sculpture at the age of 5, is something of a specialist in toothpick art, both small and large. He has done replicas of the Eiffel Tower, Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco's Transamerica Pyramid from single toothpicks, and celebrated the 75th anniversary of the Golden Gate with a 13-foot replica crafted from 30,000 toothpicks. 이쑤시개 하나로 만든 타이타닉호

샌프란시스코의 한 조형가가 '타이타닉'호 침몰 100년을 맞아 이쑤시개 하나로 모형을 만들었다.

아티스트 스티븐 제이 백맨(Stephen J. Backman)은 로스앤젤레스 타임즈와의 인터뷰에서 그가 만든 모형이 세계에서 가장 작은 타이타닉호 이거나 하나의 이쑤시개로 만들어진 가작 작은 모형일 것이라고 전했다.

타이타닉 호는 본래 269m (882피트 6인치)의 엄청난 크기이지만 이 모델의 크기는 약 4cm에 불과하다.

백맨이 이 모형을 만들기 위해 첫번째로 한 일은 이쑤시개를 조각내는 것이었다. “이쑤시개를 종이 한장 두께로 자른 후 다시 붙였다.”고 말했다.

이쑤시개 아트 전문가인 백맨은 5살부터 이쑤시개로 소형과 대형 조형물들을 만들기 시작했다.

그는 에펠 타워, 금문교와 샌프란시스코의 트랜스아메리카 피라미드를 하나의 이쑤시개로 만들었으며, 금문교 개통 75주년 기념으로 이쑤시개 3만개로 3m 크기의 모형을 만들기도 했다.
