Prominent nuclear industry leaders to gather in Seoul

A number of high-profile nuclear industry officials will attend the two-day Nuclear Industry Summit starting Friday aimed at bolstering international cooperation to enhance nuclear safety and security.

Co-chairs of the NIS International Advisory Committee such as John Ritch, director general of the World Nuclear Association; Roger Howsley, president of the World Institute for Nuclear Security; Laurent Stricker, chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators; and Marvin Fertel, president of the Nuclear Energy Institute are scheduled to give keynote speeches.

Heads of nuclear power companies from countries including Korea, the U.S., France, Russia, China, Brazil, India and South Africa will also participate, many of them as members of the three working groups.

Ricardo Perez, president of operations of Westinghouse Electric Co.; Charles Pardee, chief operating officer of Exelon Corp.; Luc Oursel, president of France’s Areva; Vladimir Shkolnik, president of Russia’s Rosatom Nuclear Energy State Corporation; Sun Qin, president of China National Nuclear Corporation; Othon Luiz Pinheiro da Silva, chairman of Brazil’s Electronuclear; and S.K. Jain, chairman of Nuclear Power Corporation of India, are among them.

Takuya Hattori, vice president of Tokyo Electric Power Co. Inc, will give a presentation on the aftermath of the Fukushima power plant accident last year.

The summit will be joined by representatives of the United States Enrichment Corporation, Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd., Italy’s Ansaldo Nucleare, Canada’s Bruce Power, Romania’s EnergoNuclear, the South African Nuclear Energy Corporation, Sweden’s Ab Svafo, the Taiwan Power Company, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation and the U.K.’s Urenco.

Top officials from the World Nuclear Transport Institute, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission, Kazakhstan’s Kzatomprom, Algeria’s Atomic Energy Commission and the Australian National Nuclear Research and Development Organisation will also take part in the NIS.
