Study says Venice, Italy, still sinking

Water is increasingly encroaching on Venice, Italy, and it's not just the rising sea; researchers say they've confirm the coastal city is still sinking.

Although some previous studies have suggested the city had stabilized, U.S. researchers say the historic northern Italian city is still slowly sinking and even beginning to tilt a bit to the east.

"Venice appears to be continuing to subside, at a rate of about 2 millimeters a year," said Yehuda Bock, a research geodesist with the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, Calif.

"It's a small effect, but it's important."

With sea level in the Venetian lagoon rising at the same rate the city is sinking, the combined effect would see the city settle 8.1 centimeters further into the ocean by 2032, the study published in the journal Geochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems said.

Some Italian researchers say the current rate of sinking is not that serious.

"One millimeter is nothing with respect to the problem that Venice experienced 20, 30 years ago," Pietro Teatini, a researcher with the University of Padua, said. "It's a small amount." (UPI)

게다가 도시는 가라앉으면서 동쪽으로 약간씩 기울고 있다.

연구진에 따르면 도시의 침식과 같은 속도로 해수면이 상승하면서 앞으로 20년 뒤인 2032년에는 도시가 지금보다 8.1센티미터 정도 가라앉을 수 있다고 한다.

그러나 파두아 대학의 피에트로 현재와 같은 침식 속도가 그리 심하지 않다면서, “20,30년 전에 도시가 겪은 문제에 비하면 1밀리미터는 아무것도 아니다”라고 말했다.

영국의 대문호 셰익스피어의 희곡 ‘베니스의 상인’의 무대로도 유명한 베네치아는 과거에 강의 범람으로 인해 예술작품과 귀중한 건축물이 대부분 잠기는 등 심각한 피해를 겪은 바 있다.

이후 수로의 정비 등을 통해 피해를 줄이긴 했으나 침수 문제에서 완전히 자유롭지는 못한 상황이다.
