Gay prisoners of Category A will be allowed to get married in some of the UK’s top security jails, a spokesman for the National Offender Management Service revealed.

Prison Service Order 4445 states that inmates qualify for a civil union as long as they are of the same sex, over age 16, not related, and not already married.

The development comes after a homosexual criminal's mother wrote to Inside Time magazine about the issue, saying her son "expressed a wish to marry another male Category A prisoner who is in the same jail." She posed the question "whether he would ever get permission for this," the Daily Mail reported.

Maximum security prisons that will allow same-sex marriages within its walls include Belmarsh in London and HMP Long Worcestershire, both Category A facilities that house adult male killers, rapists, drug dealers and terrorists of high profile.

HM Prison Long Worcestershire was once home to notorious terror suspect Abu Quata and currently confines highly dangerous criminals such as serial killer Ipswich Ripper Steve Wright who murdered five people in 2006.

Homosexual inmates who wish to tie the knot in jail may also invite guests within the number deemed reasonable by the Governor. 

They will be liable for all the costs involved.
