Opposition parties announce unified candidates for general elections

Opposition parties on Monday announced dozens of unified candidates for key districts in next month's parliamentary elections after a two-day joint survey on which hopefuls are favored among voters.

The main opposition Democratic United Party and the minor opposition United Progressive Party (UPP) agreed earlier this month to field unified candidates in key marginal constituencies in order to avoid dividing their votes in the April 11 general elections.

They conducted a voter survey on hopefuls from the two parties on Saturday and Sunday, and announced 69 winners Monday, including UPP leader Lee Jung-hee and the main opposition's In Jae-keun, the wife of renowned late democracy activist-turned-politician Kim Geun-tae.

The main opposition won in 57 districts, including Rep. Chung Sye-kyun in Seoul's Jongno district and Rep. Chung Dong-young in Seoul's Gangnam district.

Well-known winners from the minor opposition party included Cheon Ho-sun, who served as presidential spokesman during the administration of late President Roh Moo-hyun, and former lawmakers Shim Sang-jung and Roh Hoe-chan. (Yonhap News)

야권 단일후보 발표..이정희ㆍ인재근 승리

통합진보당의 이정희(서울 관악구을) 대표와 민 주통합당 인재근(서울 도봉구갑) 후보가 4ㆍ11 총선의 야권 단일후보로 확정됐다.

민주통합당과 통합진보당은 19일 이 같은 내용의 야권 단일후보 경선 결과를 발 표했다.

서울 관악구을에서는 이정희 대표가 관악구청장 출신의 현역 의원인 민주당 김 희철 의원을, 도봉구갑에서는 고(故) 김근태 고문의 부인 인재근 후보가 참여정부 대변인 출신의 통합진보당 이백만 후보를 각각 누르고 후보로 확정됐다.

은평구을에서는 통합진보당의 천호선 대변인이 민주당 고연호 후보를 이겨 새누리당 이재오 의원과 맞붙게 됐고, 통합진보당 심상정(경기 고양 덕양갑) 후보와 노회찬(노원구병) 대변인도 각각 승리했다.

야권 대권주자인 민주당 정세균(서울 종로구), 정동영(서울 강남구을) 의원도 모두 승리했고, 민주통합당 대표 출신의 이용선(서울 양천구을) 후보와 김경수(경남김해을) 노무현재단 봉하사업본부장도 후보로 확정됐다.

그러나 진보신당 대표를 지낸 통합진보당 조승수 의원은 울산 남구갑에서 민주 당 심규명 의원에게 패했다.

또 민주당의 전략공천 후보인 경기 이천시의 김도식 전 경기지방경찰청장은 이 천시청 고문변호사 출신의 통합진보당 엄태준 후보에게, 경기 여주군ㆍ양평군ㆍ가평 군의 조민행 변호사는 통합진보당 이병은 후보에게 각각 패했다.

이날 발표된 69개 선거구 경선 결과 민주당이 57곳, 통합진보당이 11곳, 진보신 당이 1곳에서 승리한 것으로 집계됐다. (연합뉴스)
