The Embassy of the Republic of Ghana to Korea celebrated its 55th Independence Anniversary on March 6 in Seoul.

Ghana was the first colonial sub-Saharan country in Africa to gain independence, in 1957.

Ambassador Margaret Clarke-Kwesie said that the country had achieved relative success through economic reforms passed over the last decades, and praised strengthening relations between Korea and the African nation.

According to the Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Korean exports to Ghana totaled about $213.6 million in 2010, with the main items being cars, electrical appliances and machinery. Imports from Ghana came to a little less than $21.4 million, including cocoa, wood products and fish.

“Korea has become increasingly attractive to Ghana both as potential foreign direct investment, technological transfer, knowledge sharing and source of expertise, which make significant contributions toward our ongoing economic development,” Clarke-Kwesie said.
