95-year-old climbs out of coffin after being 'dead' for days

A Chinese woman who was thought to have passed away woke up six days after she had supposedly died, Daily Mail and Times of India reported Sunday.

95-year-old Li Xiufeng tripped and suffering a head injury at her home in Beiliu, Guangxi Province.

Two weeks later, neighbors found her in bed motionless and not breathing.

"She didn't get up, so I came up to wake her up," the Daily Mail quoted the woman's neighbor Chen Qingwang, 60, as saying.

"No matter how hard I pushed her and called her name, she had no reactions.

"I felt something was wrong, so I tried her breath, and she has gone, but her body is still not cold," he said.

The neighbors thought she passed away and placed her in a coffin, which was kept in her house unsealed under Chinese tradition for friends and relatives to pay respects.

The "dead" woman was left in her coffin two days after she was discovered while Qingwang and his son prepared her funeral.

But the day before the funeral, Qingwang arrived at her house and found her "corpse" had disappeared.

"We were so terrified, and immediately asked the neighbors to come for help," Qingwang said.

The neighbors later discovered that the woman had woken up, and was in her kitchen cooking.

"I slept for a long time. After waking up, I felt so hungry, and wanted to cook something to eat," she told villagers.

"I pushed the lid for a long time to climb out," she said.

Medical experts said the old lady had suffered an "artificial death,” when a person has no breath, but their body remains warm.

"Thanks to the local tradition of parking the coffin in the house for several days, she could be saved," a doctor at the hospital said.

한 이웃은 "할머니가 보이지 않아 집에 들어가 누워있는 할머니를 흔들며 이름까지 불렀으나 아무런 반응이 없었다. 숨소리를 들어봤는데 숨소리도 없었다. 그러 나 몸은 여전히 차갑지 않았다"고 기억했다.

이웃들은 할머니가 죽은 것으로 생각하고 장례준비에 들어갔다. 우선 할머니를 관으로 모시고 이 지방의 전통에 따라 이레간의 애도기간에 들어갔다. 그런데 관에 들어간 할머니가 살아서 돌아온 것이다.

할머니는 "한숨 푹 잔 느낌이었다. 깨어나 관 뚜껑을 어렵게 열고 나오니 심한 허기가 느꼈다. 그래서 부엌에 가 먹을 음식을 준비하고 있었는데 이웃이 왔다"고 말했다.

의사들은 할머니가 숨을 쉬지 않는 '유사 죽음'을 경험한 것으로 판단하고 있다. 이 동안에 체온은 정상을 유지한다고 설명했다.

한 의사는 "시신을 집에 일주일 정도 모셔두었다가 매장하는 현지 풍속 때문에 할머니가 목숨을 구했다"고 말했다.
