Man gives Valentine's kidney

A Chicago man is celebrating Valentine's Day by giving his girlfriend one of the most precious gifts he has -- his kidney.

Terry Lee said his girlfriend, Trisha Beckwith, was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease Lupus after they had been dating for about four months and soon discovered her kidneys were not functioning, The (Nashville) Tennessean reported Tuesday.

Lee said "the decision was easy" when they found out his blood type was a match.

"I care about her, love her, and want her to live a normal life," he said. "The way I measure love is this: If you take the person out of the equation, and don't like the way your life looks without them, you are probably in love."

The couple traveled to Nashville for the Valentine's Day surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

UPI통신은 14일, 미국 시카고의 사는 테리 리 씨가 자신의 여자친구 트리샤 베크위드 씨가 자가면역계 질환인 루푸스 (낭창: Lupus)에 걸린 것을 알고 신장을 기증했다고 전했다.

테리 씨는 자신이 여자친구를 사랑하고, “정상적인 삶을 살기를 바란다”면서 이 결정이 쉬운 결정이었다고 밝혔다.

“자신이 사랑에 빠졌는지 여부를 알아내는 방법은 간단합니다. 만약 (사랑하는) 그 사람이 없다고 쳤을 때 자신의 삶이 마음에 안 든다면, 아마 사랑에 빠진 거겠죠,”라고 테리 씨는 말했다.
