Billionaire George Soros said “the euro must survive because the alternative, a breakup, would cause a meltdown that Europe, the world, can’t afford,” Newsweek Magazine reported, citing an interview in New York ahead of his participation at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

In his speech at Davos, Soros will say it is “now more likely than now” that Greece will formally default in 2012, Newsweek said. Soros nevertheless thinks the euro will survive, according to Newsweek.

The world is facing a period of “evil,” Soros said, adding that he foresees Europe descending into chaos and conflict, while rioting in the streets of the U.S. will lead to a curtailment of civil liberties and the global economic system possibly collapsing altogether, Newsweek reported.

By contrast, Soros sees a “very positive” future for the developing world and said the “aspiration of people for an open society is very inspiring,” Newsweek reported.

To avoid catastrophe in 2012, the experiences of 2011 mustn’t be wasted, Soros said, according to Newsweek. “The European Union could regain its luster,” he said, adding that he’s “hopeful” that the U.S. will “pass a very severe test and actually strengthen the institution,” Newsweek reported.

미국의 억만장자 투자가인 조지 소로스(81)는 유럽의 재정위기 와 관련, 유로화가 살아남아야 하며 분열되면 유럽과 세계가 감당할 수 없는 금융시 스템의 붕괴를 초래할 것이라고 경고했다.

24일(현지시간) 미 시사주간 뉴스위크에 따르면 소로스는 "유로화의 붕괴는 유럽을 수세기동안 분열시켰던 정치 적 충돌을 다시 불러일으키고 인종차별주의를 심화시킬 수 있다"고 주장했다.

그는 최상의 시나리오는 디플레이션이고 최악의 시나리오는 금융시스템의 붕괴 라고 강조했다.

소로스는 현재의 경제 위기를 1930년대 대공황과 소련의 붕괴에 비유하면서 사 람들은 소련이 붕괴할 때 무엇이 일어났는지 완전히 이해하지 못하고 있다고 지적했다.

소로스의 경고는 그리스 부채 해결을 위한 협상이 지지부진한데 영향받아 미 증 시가 하락한 가운데 나온 것이다.

소로스는 자신이 20억달러어치의 유럽채권을 매입, 유로화에 도움을 줬다면서 주로 이탈리아 국채로 지금은 파산한 'MF 글로벌' 증권회사로부터 사들였다고 밝혔 다.

그는 이어 '월가를 점령하라' 시위에 대해 지지의사를 표하고 자신이 미 민주당 지지자이며 버락 오바마 대통령이 올해 선거에서 승리해 미국을 놀라게 할 것이라고 예상했다.

1992년 영국 파운드화 폭락시 파운드화를 투매, 10억달러를 벌어들인바 있는 소 로스는 장기 우량주에 투자하는 반면 금에 대한 투자는 회피하는 방식으로 부(富)를 쌓아왔다.
