Prosecutors said Tuesday that they have applied for a warrant to arrest a former aide to the parliamentary speaker on suspicion of colluding in hacking the election watchdog's Web site in October.

Prosecutors said their request is for a 30-year-old Kim, a former aide of National Assembly Speaker Park Hee-tae, for allegedly working with another lawmaker's aide surnamed Kong in a cyber attack on the Web site of the election watchdog on the day of October's local by-elections.

The move came as Kong, an aide to Rep. Choi Ku-sik, a lawmaker of the ruling Grand National Party, was arrested for allegedly masterminding the cyber attack in an attempt to lower voter turnout among young people, the main supporters for then liberal Seoul mayoral candidate Park Won-soon.

Park won the mayoralty despite the cyber attacks.

The prosecutor's move could cause a stir as police earlier concluded that Kong was the sole mastermind in the cyber attacks that were aimed at preventing young voters from accessing polling stations on the election watchdog's Web site.

Kong was suspected of hiring professional hackers to carry out the attacks on the Internet sites of the National Election Commission and the liberal candidate Park for two hours on Oct. 26. (Yonhap)
