Life in jail for China civil servant who threw wife off cruise ship

A civil servant who claimed he threw his ex-wifeto her death from a Hong Kong cruise ship to fulfill her wish for aburial at sea was Friday beginning a life sentence for murder.

Chinese national Wang Weilie, 49, told police his wife YangWenjuan was suicidal and he thought she was dead when he threw herinto the sea on September 24, 2010.

He claimed she banged her head as he struggled to stop her killingherself on the ship and that she had asked him previously to disposeof her body at sea when she died.

But a postmortem examination found Yang, 43, died of drowningafter suffering non-fatal injuries including heavy blows to the head,the South China Morning Post reported.

Wang, who worked for the Guangzhou government in China, was foundguilty of murder in a trial ending Thursday and was sentenced to lifein prison, the newspaper said. (DPA)

그는 경찰 진술에서 아내가 자살하려는 과정에서 몸싸움이 있었고 아내가 머리를 찧기도 했다면서 이후 아내가 숨을 거둔 것으로 생각해 평소 그녀의 희망대로 시 신을 수장했다고 주장했다.

그러나 부검 결과 머리에 큰 충격이 있기 했지만 부인 양씨의 상처들은 치명적 이지 않았으며, 물에 빠져 익사한 것으로 확인됐다고 신문은 전했다.
