Men more likely to fall in love first

Men are three times more likely to say “I love you” first in a relationship, reversing previous research that women are more expressive about how they feel, a recent study showed.

According to the study conducted by psychologist Marissa Harrison from Pennsylvania State University in the United States, women are more cautious than men to show their affection in a relationship.

The study, published in the Journal of Social Psychology, showed that men were more likely to fall in love in just a few weeks. Women, however, said it took several months to fall in love.

“Men reported falling in love sooner and three times as many men as women said ‘I love you’ first to their partners,” Harrison said in the report.

“Perhaps women are perceived as less rational about love because they have a greater capacity for processing emotional experiences,” she added.

The study also showed that men wanted to have sex for the first time after a few weeks. Meanwhile, women said they wanted to wait a few months.

사랑고백, 男이 女보다 세배 빨라

터질 듯한 사랑의 감정을 남성이 여성보다 더 빨리 느끼고, 사랑고백 또한 먼저 하는 것으로 나타났다.

미국 펜실베이니아대 심리학과의 마리사 해리슨 교수는 27일(현지시간) 로맨스 에 있어 여성이 남성보다 신중하다는 연구 결과를 발표했다.

해리슨 교수가 172명의 대학생을 대상으로 남녀관계에 대한 인터뷰를 진행한 결 과 남성은 몇 주 안에 사랑에 빠질 수 있지만, 여성에게는 이 과정이 몇 달까지 소 요되는 것으로 나타났다.

또 상대방에서 먼저 사랑한다고 고백한 비율도 남성이 여성보다 3배 더 많았다.

해리슨 교수는 인터뷰 대상이 된 대학생들에게 사랑에 빠진 것을 깨닫기까지 얼 마나 걸렸는지 조사했다.

또 사랑을 고백하기 전까지 상대방과 얼마나 깊은 관계를 맺었는지 물었다.

해리슨 교수는 여성들이 기존의 사회 통념처럼 미친 듯이 사랑에 빠져들지는 않 는다면서 여성은 남성보다 현실적인 편이라고 설명했다.

그는 "그간 여성은 감정적 경험을 소화하는 능력이 뛰어나기 때문에 사랑에 대 해 덜 이성적이라고 인식돼왔다"고 말했다.

또 연구 결과에 따르면 남성은 만난 지 몇 주 안에 성적인 관계를 맺기를 바랐 지만, 여성은 성관계를 시작하기 전까지 몇 달쯤 기다리는 것을 선호했다. 해리슨 박사는 이와 관련해 "남성이 성관계 때문에 먼저 사랑을 표현한다고 생 각할 수도 있겠지만, 조사 결과 정열적 사랑의 감정과 성적 욕망은 메커니즘 자체가 달랐다"고 덧붙였다.

이 연구는 '사회심리학 저널(Journal of Social Psychology)' 최신호에 실렸다.
