Number of civil servants close to 1 million

The number of civil servants in South Korea has risen sharply to approach the 1 million mark, the home affairs ministry said Thursday.

There were 987,754 central and local government officials as of last year's end, up 7.9 percent from 915,221 in 2005, the Ministry of Public Administration and Security said.

The figure has since been on a steady rise to 940,397 in 2006, 963,132 in 2007, 968,836 in 2008 and 977,087 in 2009, according to the ministry's tally.

The number of local government officials, in particular, rose 5.1 percent last year compared to five years ago.

Officials said there will be a further rise in the number of public officials this year as the ruling party and the government are seeking to hire more welfare officials and firefighters.

The average age of civil servants was 41.2 for the central government and 42.3 for local administrations, up 0.4 and 0.5 each from 2009.

Public officials at the central government have worked for 14.8 years on average while the average length of service for local officials was 15.8 years, the ministry said. (Yonhap News)

공무원 100만명 육박…5년만에 7만3천명 증가

공무원 숫자가 크게 늘어나며 100만명에 육박한 것으로 나타났다.

행정안전부는 지난해 말 기준 국가와 지방 공무원 현원이 98만7천754명으로 5년만에 7만2천533명(7.9%) 늘어났다고 7일 밝혔다.

공무원 수는 2005년 말 91만5천221명에서 2006년 94만397명, 2007년 96만3천132명, 2008년 96만8천836명, 2009년 97만8천87명으로 꾸준히 증가했다.

이 가운데 지방 공무원은 5년 전에 비해 1만3천460명(5.1%) 늘었다.

지난해 공무원이 9천667명(1.0%) 증가했는데 이 중 행정부 국가 공무원은 62만2천737명, 지방 공무원은 27만9천636명으로 각각 7천247명과 1천333명 많아졌다.

특정직인 교사가 35만6천223명으로 5천180명(1.4%) 늘었고 기능직이 일반직으로 전환되는 움직임에 따라 기능직은 4만641명으로 1천789명 감소했지만 일반직은 2천715명 많아져 11만565명이 됐다.

계약직은 국가 1천543명, 지방 3천859명으로 전년에 비해 각각 90명 줄고 202명 늘었다.

신규채용은 국가 2만980명, 지방 7천484명으로 전년에 비해 각각 3천95명과 75명 감소했고 퇴직은 국가 1만7천425명, 지방 6천743명으로 전년에 비해 각각 2천322명과 2천277명 많아졌다.

올해 들어 당정이 복지와 소방 분야 공무원 증원을 추진하고 있어 공무원 수는 더욱 확대될 것으로 보인다.

공무원 평균 연령은 국가 41.2세, 지방 42.3세로 전년에 비해 각각 0.4세와 0.5 세 높아졌고 재직연수도 국가 14.8년, 지방 15.8년으로 각각 0.3년과 0.2년 길어졌다.

여성 공무원은 국가 29만3천917명, 지방 9천3천282명으로 전년보다 각각 9천895명, 1천104명 증가했다. (연합뉴스)
