지난 회에 이어, 유용한 비즈니스 영어 표현들을 소개합니다. ‘비즈니스 영어’라는 게 따로 떨어져 존재하는 것은 아닙니다만, 일상 회화에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 표현들을 활용하는 것도 사실입니다. 저희 책 『나는 더 영어답게 말하고 싶다 비즈니스 편』에서 뽑은 표현들입니다.  

<처우, 혜택>

A: Could you tell me about what kind of fringe benefits I’d receive as an employee?

B: In addition to receiving a company car, we’ll be giving you a monthly living allowance.

A: 직원으로서 어떤 부가 혜택을 받게 될지 알려주실 수 있나요?

B: 회사에서 차를 제공받고 매달 주거 보조금을 받게 됩니다.

SITUATION 부가적인 혜택이 있을 때

평범하게 What kind of additional benefits will I receive as an employee?

영어답게 What kind of fringe benefits will I receive as an employee?

benefit은 ‘혜택’이라는 뜻이지만 회사에서 제공하는 급여를 포함한 각종 혜택을 광범위하게 표현하기에도 적합한 단어입니다. fringe가 ‘가장자리’라는 뜻이므로 fringe benefits라고 하면 추가로 제공하는 혜택을 말합니다.

A: Profits at my company were so good last year that my salary for this year has reached six-figures.

B: Congratulations. When will I become a six-figure income earner?

A: 지난해 우리 회사의 실적이 아주 좋아서 올해는 억대 연봉을 받게 됐어.

B: 축하해. 난 언제쯤 억대 연봉자가 될까?

SITUATION 억대 연봉을 표현할 때

평범하게 My business is making more than one hundred thousand dollars a year.

영어답게 My business is making over six-figures a year.

우리말 억대 연봉의 영어 표현은 six-figure income입니다. 6자리 숫자란 뜻의 six-figure가 10만 달러 단위의 금액을 가리키는 것인데, 10만 달러면 원화로 환산했을 때 억대의 금액이므로 우리말 억대 연봉과 동일한 의미가 되는 것이죠. 이 밖에 수십억이나 수천억을 의미하는 경우에는 seven-figure나 nine-figure 같은 표현을 쓰기도 합니다. 예를 들어 ‘헤지 펀드 매니저가 수천억 원을 벌었다’라고 하려면 The best performing hedge fund managers were making nine-figure salaries.처럼, ‘수십억 매출을 거두는 회사를 일구려면 확실한 계획이 있어야 한다’라고 하려면 The key to building a seven-figure business is a clear business plan.처럼 말할 수 있습니다.

A: Are you alright with the stated salary and benefits that the job offers?

B: I am generally satisfied with the compensation package that the company offered me, but there are some minor details I’d like to discuss with you.

A: 저희가 제안한 급여와 혜택에 만족하십니까?

B: 전체적으로 제안하신 보상에 만족하지만 논의했으면 하는 몇 가지 사항이 있습니다.

SITUATION 급여나 퇴직금으로 받는 혜택을 표현할 때

평범하게 I am satisfied with the salary and other benefits that the company offered me.

영어답게 I am satisfied with the compensation package that the company offered me.

연봉이나 퇴직금에는 여러 항목의 혜택(benefit)이 포함되어 있기 때문에 보통 package라는 단어를 붙여 말합니다. 연봉(보상)은 compensation package라고 하고 퇴직금은 severance package라고 부르는데, 이때 severance는 자른다는 뜻을 가진 동사 sever의 명사형으로, 회사와의 관계를 단절하는 것이란 의미를 담고 있습니다.

A: I was wondering when I would be able to receive the reimbursement for my company expenses.

B: All travel, meals and housing allowances will be paid the following month after the company receives all the receipts.

A: 비용 지불한 것을 언제 환급 받는지 궁금합니다.

B: 모든 출장비, 식비, 주거 보조비는 회사가 모든 영수증을 받은 후 다음 달에 지급합니다.

SITUATION 회사에서 제공하는 주거 지원비를 표현할 때

평범하게 We agreed upon a 3 million won salary plus support for housing.

영어답게 We agreed upon a 3 million won salary plus a housing allowance.

allowance는 ‘용돈’이라는 뜻입니다. 부모가 자식에게 주는 용돈뿐 아니라, 마음대로 쓸 수 있도록 보조해 주는 적당한 액수의 돈을 모두 allowance로 나타낼 수 있죠. 회사에서 직원에게 지원해주는 체력 단련비, 식비, 기름값 등 소량의 보조금도 allowance라고 합니다.

A: So how are you getting paid by the company without being an actual employee?

B: As an outside director, I act as a third-party consultant while still being on the company’s payroll.

A: 직원도 아닌데 어떻게 회사로부터 급여를 받고 있나요?

B: 사외 이사로 제 3자 입장에서 회사로부터 급여를 받으며 자문을 해 주고 있습니다.

SITUATION 급여를 받는 것을 표현할 때

평범하게 I am being paid by the company.

영어답게 I am on the company’s payroll.

어떤 회사나 단체(organization)에서 정기적으로 급여를 받는다면 be on the payroll이라는 말을 쓸 수 있습니다. payroll은 급여 지불 내역을 적은 장부에서 유래한 단어죠. on the payroll이라고 하면 돈을 받는 사람 명단에 이름이 올라있다는 뜻이므로 급여를 받는다는 의미가 됩니다.
