토익은 Test of English for International Communication의 줄임말이다.

국제적인 의사소통을 위한 시험이다. 당연히 실용영어 시험인데 여기에 나오는 단어나 표현을 실용영어로 잘 활용하지 못하는 경우가 많다! 정답을 맞추는 것은 기본이다. 

추가적으로 이 시험에 나오는 단어나 표현을 실제 쓸 수 있도록 응용하는 것이 중요하다. 필자는 지금도 매 회 토익 시험을 보고 시험 본 직후 라이브 토익 후기를 진행하고 있다. 토익을 보시는 독자들도 함께 하시면 무척 반가울 것 같다. 며칠 전 최신 기출 단어와 표현을 저작권에 전혀 영향을 받지 않게 완전히 새로운 예문들로 제공한다.

Part 1

flyer(광고지, 광고전단)

유사단어들 : pamphlet, brochure, leaflet

A flyer (or flier) is a form of paper advertisement intended for wide distribution and typically posted or distributed in a public place, handed out to individuals or sent through the mail. 

(flyer 또는 flier는 널리 유포할 목적. 전형적으로는 공공장소에 게시되거나 배부할 목적, 개인에게 배부될 목적, 또는 우편으로 보내질 목적으로 만들어진 일종의 광고지이다)

* metal container(금속으로 만든 컵, 통)

container는 수출용 컨테이너만 있는 것이 아니고 작은 그릇, 컵, 담는 것이면 모두 다 container이다!

* arched windows(활모양의 창), an arched doorway(활모양의 문)

*trim: To make neat or tidy by clipping, smoothing, or pruning(가위로 자르기, 부드럽게 하기, 가지치기를 해서 깔끔하게 만들다)

(ex) He trimmed his moustache.(그는 콧수염을 다듬었다)

(ex) She trimmed the hedges.(그녀는 울타리를 다듬었다)

(ex) He's trimming some branches(그는 나뭇가지치기를 했다)

*vehicle: 바퀴달린 것은 유모차부터 트럭까지 모두 가리키는 단어

(ex) Some vehicles have been parked in a row.(차량들이 일렬로 주차되어 있다

* place an order:주문하다 – place를 쓰는 것에 주의하자!

(ex) We placed an order nearly an hour ago, but we still haven't gotten anything to eat.
(우리는 거의 한 시간 전에 주문했지만 아직 음식이 오지 않았다)

*substitute: 대체물, 대체자 – 전치사 for와 잘 어울린다.

The chef can use a substitute.
(주방장은 대체 재료를 사용할 수 있다)

She's going to be serving as my substitute while I'm on sabbatical.
(그녀가 내가 안식년으로 쉬는 동안 나를 대신해서 일할 것이다)

sabbatical year (안식년), sabbatical day(안식일)

* optical 시각의 , 광학의

(ex) cameras, binoculars and other optical instruments 카메라, 쌍안경, 광학기기들)

There are specialized optical aids which can help visually impaired people.(시각 장애인들을 도울 수 있는 시각 보조기구들이 있다)

*drought resistant crops(가뭄에 잘 견디는 농작물)

*expedite a shipment(특송으로 배송하다)

* within: 전치사로 그 뒤에 기간이 나온다. 그런데 from within처럼 명사처럼 쓰이기도 한다.

(ex) We recommend that this wine should be consumed within six months.(우리는 이 와인을 6주 내에 마셔야 한다고 추천합니다)

(ex) We could hear sounds coming from within.
(우리는 내부로부터 나오는 소리를 들을 수 있었다)

*complimentary 칭찬하는(praising or expressing admiration for someone)

(ex) The reviews of his latest film have been highly complimentary.
(그의 최신 영화평은 극찬이어 왔다)

(ex) If tickets, books, etc. are complimentary, they are given free, especially by a business.
(표나 책들이 complimentary라면 이들이 특히 사업체에 의해서 무료제공이라는 것이다)

uneven: not level, equal, flat, or continuous(평평하지 않은, 공정하지 않은, 평평하지 않은, 고르게 지속적이지 않은) (= rough)

(ex) The contest was very uneven - the other team was much stronger than us.
(그 대회는 불공평했다. 상대팀이 우리보다 너무너무 강했다)

(ex) The patient's breathing was quick and uneven.
(그 환자의 숨은 급하고 고르지 못했다)

(ex) The uneven floorboards creaked when you walked across them.
(그 고르지 못한 마루 바닥은 당신이 그곳을 걸을 때 끽끽 소리를 냈다)
