South Korea's international air passenger traffic rose 12.5 percent last month from a year earlier on increased travel demand, the transport ministry said Tuesday.

The number of passengers to and from South Korea came to 9.77 million in April, up from 8.68 million tallied a year earlier, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement.

As more Koreans traveled abroad and low-cost carriers provided more flights on Asian routes, the overall passenger traffic on international routes jumped 18.4 percent to 6.89 million last month compared with a year ago, the statement said.

In April, passenger traffic on Chinese routes increased 43.9 percent to 1.29 million on-year, but it was off 23.8 percent from 1.69 million in the same month of 2016, it said.

China banned the sale of travel packages to South Korea in March 2017 due to a diplomatic row with Seoul over the deployment of an anti-missile system in South Korea. Travel demand from China remained weak throughout last year.

"As outbound travel demand is expected to rise around the summer holidays and demand from China looks set to recover from sharp declines last year, air passenger traffic should increase for the rest of the year," a ministry official said.

Domestic passenger traffic edged up 0.5 percent on-year to 2.88 million and air cargo traffic climbed 4.2 percent to 370,000 tons during the cited period, the statement said. (Yonhap)
