A man in his 50s was booked without physical detention for allegedly shooting an abandoned dog in the area with his illegally manufactured firearm, Gimhae police said Wednesday.

According to Gimhae Seobu Police Station, the 57-year-old suspect is being charged with animal abuse. He is accused of firing one pellet at a dog with his 5.5-millimeter air rifle at 4:25 p.m. Tuesday in front an apartment in Gimhae, South Gyeongsang Province.

The dog reportedly ran off, leaving a trail of blood behind it. Police said they cannot confirm whether the dog is alive.

Records showed that the suspect, who holds a firearms license, had purchased an air rifle in 1995. However, the man claimed to have illegally manufactured the trigger lever and bolt following the nation’s implementation of stricter gun policies.

The man further claimed to have committed the crime in order to “serve dog meat at a gathering with close friends.”

Police have confiscated the air rifle that was used in the latest shooting and 109 pellets. They plan to decide on the penalty after additional questioning.
