Prosecutors raid ex-cyberwarfare commanders' homes in probe of political interference

Prosecutors raided the residences of two former commanders of the military's cyberwarfare unit Wednesday over allegations they illegally interfered in domestic politics.
The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said investigators were sent to the houses of Yeon Je-wook and Ok Do-kyung to seize evidence that includes mobile phones and various documents.
A separate team searched the home of a former ranking defense ministry official, only identified by his last name Lim, it added.
The ministry's internal probe team earlier announced that the cyberwarfare command engaged in a broad covert political maneuver to sway public opinion in favor of the two previous conservative governments led by former Presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak.
The two former commanders are accused of leading the operations between 2011 and 2013. Lim is suspected of being debriefed on the performance.
The probe also found that the command regularly reported to the presidential office on their online activities.
The justice ministry has banned former Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin from leaving the country pending the investigation.
The prosecution has been carrying out a sweeping investigation into allegations that government agencies, including the National Intelligence Service, illegally meddled in politics in support of conservatives under the two previous administrations. (Yonhap)
