美시냅틱스, 온스크린 지문인식 상용화 실패
[더인베스터(코리아헤럴드)=김영원기자] 삼성전자가 오는 29일 공개되는 ‘풀스크린(full-screen)’ 갤럭시S8에 전면 디스플레이 지문인식을 채택하지 못한 것으로 알려졌다.
업계에서는 삼성의 지문인식 파트너사인 미국 시냅틱스가 끝내 관련 기술을 완성하지 못한 것을 그 원인으로 지적하고 있다.
한 업계 관계자는 인베스터에 “시냅틱스가 아직 데모 수준의 검증되지 않은 기술을 양산 가능한 기술이라며 삼성에 제안을 했고 삼성은 그런 샘플 기술을 끝까지 시도하다가 무산됐다”고 설명했다.
그 결과 올 초 양산에 임박해 울며 겨자먹기로 후면 지문인식을 채택할 수 밖에 없었다는 것이다.
전면 디스플레이 지문인식 기술은 스마트폰 디스플레이 어느 곳에서나 지문인식을 가능하게 하는 것으로 최근 풀스크린 도입이 트렌드가 되면서 스마트폰 제조사 및 부품사들의 기술개발이 활발한 상황이다.
애플 역시 올해 하반기 출시 예정인 아이폰8에 전면 스크린 지문인식 센서와 3D 안면인식 카메라 등을 검토중인 것으로 알려졌는데 만약 애플이 이에 성공한다면 삼성은 혁신에서 뒤쳐질 수 밖에 없다.
이에 한 센서 업계 관계자는 “전면 스크린 지문인식을 위해서는 관련 부품들이 투명하게 제작되어야 하는데 쉽지 않은 작업”이라며 애플의 관련 도입에 대해서 유보적 입장을 보였다. 그는 “이런 문제들이 해결된다면 스마트폰 시장 전체에 획기적인 변화가 올 것”이라고 덧붙였다.
현재 시냅틱스와 함께 중국의 구딕스, 한국의 크루셜텍 등이 해당 기술 개발에 열을 올리고 있다. 구딕스와 크루셜텍은 2월 바르셀로나에서 열린 모바일월드콩그레스에서 관련 기술을 세계 최초로 선보이기도 했는데 아직 스마트폰에 적용되기까지는 기술적 완성도가 더 높아져야 한다는 것이 업계의 중론이다.

Run out of time, Samsung Galaxy S8 ditches on-screen fingerprint scanning
[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics’ upcoming Galaxy S8 is unlikely to feature on-screen fingerprint scanning, a highly anticipated function for the new phone with a larger-than-ever display screen.
Industry sources say the Korean tech giant and its touch sensor partner Synaptics were running out of time, among other things, to develop the still nascent technology.
“Samsung poured resources into Synaptics’ fledgling technology last year but the results were frustrating,” a source briefed on the matter told The Investor on condition of anonymity.
“With the production imminent, the company had to decide to relocate the fingerprint scanning home button to the back of the device at the last minute.”
A larger screen that covers almost the entire front body is a key feature for the S8. Since last year, Samsung had made all-out efforts to embed a fingerprint scanner under the display to allow users to unlock the phone by placing their finger on the screen, not the physical home button on the bottom.
But the efforts went down the drain after California-based Synaptics failed to develop the technology on time. As the result, the home button is widely expected to be relocated to the back next to the rear-facing camera lens.
The rear fingerprint scanner is a letdown for Samsung fans who have longed for the first-ever smartphone with on-screen fingerprint scanning. Some of them are calling it “technological regression” considering a number of its smaller rivals have already launched their larger-screen phone with a fingerprint scanner on the back.
Some users also complain about picking up the device repeatedly to unlock the phone or smudging the camera lens by mistake.
Most notably, industry watchers say Apple’s possible adoption of on-screen fingerprint scanning for the new iPhone 8 could steal the show from Samsung. The iPhone maker is said to be testing the waters to deploy the on-screen fingerprint scanner as well as a 3-D camera for facial recognition.
“It is still extremely difficult to develop transparent sensors and components to be used for an all-screen smartphone,” said an official of a local display tech firm, expressing skepticism about Apple’s pending adoption.
“If those technologies are fully developed, it would be a big leap forward within the smartphone industry.”
Currently, some biometric sensor and module makers such as China’s Goodix and South Korea’s CrucialTec are working on on-screen fingerprint readers. The two firms demonstrated their respective technologies during the Mobile World Congress held in Barcelona in February but no timeline was revealed for the immediate commercialization.
In the meantime, the S8 is also rumored to feature an advanced facial recognition software solution along with an iris scanner to beef up security. With the face scanner, it is expected to take less than 0.01 second to unlock the phone.
