Samsung widens gap with Apple on smartphone shipments

[THE INVESTOR] Samsung Electronics has widened the gap with its archrival Apple in terms of smartphone sales in the April-June period.

According to market research firm Counterpoint Research, Samsung shipped 77 million smartphones in the second quarter, up 3.4 percent from a year ago with 21.4 percent market share. 




Apple’s shipments declined 14.9 percent to 40.4 million units during the same period, with its market share standing at 11.2 percent, down 2.4 percent on-year.

Huawei was ranked third with 32 million shipments with 8.9 percent market share, with other Chinese companies such as Oppo (6.4 percent), Vivo (4.4 percent), ZTE (4.1 percent) and Xiaomi (4 percent) dominating the top-seller list.

Korea’s LG Electronics maintained its market share at 3.9 percent over the past year, selling 14.1 million units in the second quarter.

In terms of revenue, Apple still outpaced rivals with a 29.3 percent market share, followed by Samsung (22.7 percent), Huawei (8.9 percent), Oppo (6.9 percent) and Vivo (4.5 percent).
