[THE INVESTOR] Optics company DiYPRO announced Monday that it will be featuring a holographic display at the KCON festival next month in Los Angeles. DiYPRO’s display panel produces a holographic screen by combining multiple two-dimensional videos. CEO Kim Myung-joong said that the company will be featuring the display at CES next January as well.

Holographic technology, which has been gaining attention for its potential applications to next-generation displays, is based on optics—in other words, lens technology. The most vital aspect of lens technology is the Fresnel lens, the design of which makes it thinner and lighter than conventional lenses, which tend to become thicker the larger the size. DiYPRO is currently the only company in Korea to have developed and begun producing Fresnel lenses. Based on its production of these lenses, the company’s main goal is to develop a holographic display that is 12-by-4 meters.

Fresnel lenses are also used in motion sensors. They detect the movement of warm bodies, such as humans and animals, after which this data is relayed to a linked device. One major example is the type of motion sensor used to activate a light when a person steps into a dark room. Fresnel lenses can be used in a wide range of smart home devices and are currently used in products in various high-value-added sectors, including car lights, solar concentrators, and lighthouse beacons.

DiYPRO was launched in 2002 as a website created by the members of DIY Projector. In 2013, it was established as a corporation and received certification for its research center and Suwon plant. Also, the company has been actively working to enter foreign markets, leading to its designation as a “Gyeonggi-do Export Frontier Company” in 2015.

DiYPRO is currently supported by the Gyeonggi Center for Creative Economy & Innovation and KT. Kim said, “We will be pursuing a two-track strategy: our holographic display will be sold in Korea, in addition to spare parts, while our motion sensor lens will be used to target the overseas market.”
