British electronics manufacturer Dyson unveiled a filter-free vacuum cleaner at a press event in Seoul on Thursday.

The company said its new machine, the DC52, has adopted a unique technology that does not require filter maintenance.

“There is no filter maintenance throughout the machine’s lifetime and no loss of suction even after 10 years,” Dyson’s senior design engineer Matt Steel said at the event.

This is possible because Dyson has developed cyclones with flexible tips made of synthetic rubber, the company said. The cyclones remove dust and other particles from the airstream. The spinning airflow inside cyclones agitates its new oscillating tips, which prevent dust from sticking to the cyclones, keeping them clear.

To find the right material ― synthetic rubber ― for the oscillating tips, the company tested 50 different materials, Steel said.

“Our engineers have also spent time in real homes to calculate how much dust would be picked up over 10 years. They proved that the company’s cleaner maintains constant suction with the equivalent volume of dust,” he said.
