Korean movies attracted more than 100 million people to box offices for the second straight year in 2013, official data showed Saturday.
According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), which monitors ticket sales in the country, audience numbers hit the vaunted mark as of Friday this year. It said the numbers translate into an average Korean seeing at least two locally made movies this year. South Korea has a population of 50 million.
It added that the figure is significant because the 100 million mark was breached 47 days earlier than in 2012.
This makes it likely that a new annual record will be set in the number of viewers of Korean movies. Last year, the total tally of people watching Korean movies surpassed 114.6 million, the highest on record, KOFIC said.
Of the films released, the council said "Miracle in Cell No. 7" drew more than 12.8 million viewers, followed by over 9 million for "Snowpiercer."
It added that the overall number of people watching films -- domestic and foreign -- reached 165.6 million in the first nine months of this year, up by more than 22.6 million vis-a-vis the year before.
