지난해 발견된 혜성이 올해 말엽 지구 근처까지 접근할 예정이며, 이로 인해 혜성이 보름달만큼 밝게 빛나는 장관을 연출할 가능성이 있다고 러시아의 아마추어 천체관측인들이 밝혔다.

미국 디스커버리 채널의 인터넷 페이지인 디스커버리닷컴이 보도한 바에 따르면 러시아의 아르티옴 노비초녹과 비탈리 네브스키가 혜성 ISON을 처음 발견한 것은 지난 9월이었다고 한다.

노비초녹은 블로그를 통해 “이 물체는 느리고 특이한 움직임을 보였”지만 해당 물체를 찍은 이미지가 너무 작아 혜성이라는 확신을 가질 수 없었다고 한다. 그러나 후속 관찰을 통해 이 물체는 혜성이라는 것이 밝혀졌다.

현재 목성의 궤도 너머에 있는 이 혜성은 2013년 말엽에 태양을 매우 근접한 거리에서 지나게 되며, 11월 초에서 2014년 1월까지 이 혜성을 육안으로 확인하는 것이 가능하다고 한다.

Comet heads our way for celestial show

A newly discovered comet could be the celestial spectacle of a century and light up the skies as bright as a full moon in 2013, its Russian discoverers say.

Amateur Russian skywatchers Artyom Novichonok and Vitali Nevski observed the object dubbed Comet ISON in September, Discovery.com reported.

"The object was slow and had a unique movement," Novichonok wrote on a comet-hunting blog.

"But we could not be certain that it was a comet, because the scale of our images are quite small and the object was very compact," he wrote of the object beyond the orbit of Jupiter.

However, follow-up observations confirmed the discovery.

In late 2013 Comet ISON is expected to pass extremely close to the sun, putting on a light show expected to be visible to the naked eye for skywatchers on Earth from early November through the first few weeks of January 2014.

The comet may be the brightest to appear in the sky since 1965 and may even be visible in daylight, the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center predicted. (UPI)
