Six South Koreans have been indicted after they allegedly bought and resold U.S. military equipment banned from circulation, police said Monday.

The group, including a man surnamed Kim, is suspected of purchasing seven U.S. military items, such as night vision goggles and laser target designators, from an unidentified soldier stationed at a U.S. military base in Dongducheon, 40 km north of Seoul, in May of last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency (SMPA) said.

Kim then allegedly smuggled the pieces out of the country and sold each for between 1.5 million won (US$1,356) and 3 million won in Japan and Taiwan.

The night vision devices are attached to automatic machine guns and helmets to enhance visibility during night-time operations, the SMPA added.

Another suspect, only identified as his surname Hwang, is charged with buying large amounts of U.S. military equipment, such as helmets, bulletproof vests and clubs, from U.S. soldiers and selling them to civilians from his store near the base, the SMPA said.

The suspects claimed during police questioning that the U.S. soldiers first approached them about the trade, the police said.

The SMPA said they will work closely with U.S. intelligence agencies including Homeland Security Investigations and the U.S. Department of Defense to further investigate similar cases. (Yonhap News)

레이저 장비 등 미군무기거래 “딱 걸렸어”

서울지방경찰청 국제범죄수사대는 적외선 표적지시기 등 유통이 금지된 미군 전략물자를 주한미군으로부터 사들여 판매한 혐의(군용물 등 범죄에 관한 특별조치법 위반)로 김모(41)씨 등 6명을 불구속 입건했다고 22일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 김씨는 지난해 5월 경기도 동두천에 근무 중인 주한미군으로부터 적외선 표적지시기, 야간투시경 등 7점의 물자를 구매해 일본, 대만 등지에서 점당 150만∼300만원에 판매한 혐의를 받고 있다.

야간 전투 때 사용되는 이 장비들은 각각 자동소총과 헬멧에 부착돼 레이저로 목표물을 겨냥하거나 사물을 비추는 기능을 한다.

또 다른 피의자 황모(43)씨는 동두천에서 군용물품 전문매장을 운영하면서 미군 병사들로부터 저격용 조준경을 구매해 판매한 혐의다.

황씨는 이외에도 미군용 헬멧, 대검, 방탄용 조끼 등을 미군으로부터 구입해 유통했다.

조사 결과 황씨에게서 장비를 산 구매자 중 일부는 인터넷 군용물품 판매사이트 등을 통해 국내 서바이벌게임 마니아 등에게 장비를 판매한 것으로 드러났다.

이들이 유통한 전략물자는 총 17점 2천여만원 상당이다.

김씨와 황씨는 경찰 조사에서 “미군들이 먼저 접근해 물건을 사겠느냐고 해 응했을 뿐 의도적으로 물건을 빼낸 것이 아니다”라고 주장했다.

이들이 유통한 적외선 표적지시기 등은 미국 국무성에서 전략물자로 지정한 군용물품으로 유통이 금지돼 있으며 미군만 사용하는 것으로 알려졌다.

경찰 관계자는 “주한미군의 전략물자 반출 사실을 적발한 것은 이번이 처음”이라며 “미군은 우리 측의 수사 공조 요청이 있을 때까지 물자 불법 반출 사실을 인지하지 못했으며 공조 요청 이후 재고확인 등의 조치를 하고 있다”고 밝혔다.

경찰은 기술유출보다는 단순 판매에 무게를 두고, 장비를 반출한 미군 등 가담자 등을 파악하는 데 주력하는 한편 미국 국토안보수사국, 국방부수사국 등과 공조해 지속적으로 수사할 예정이다. (연합뉴스)
