Derek Jeter, a renowned superstar and the captain of the fabled New York Yankees, is a man who earned a reputation for not being easily fazed.

But even he was caught off guard when two policemen came up to him for an autograph during the crucial first game of the American League Division Series against the Baltimore Orioles.

According to New York media, two unnamed Maryland police officers assigned to security in the Yankees dugout at the Sunday match asked the shortstop and a fellow Yankee Nick Swisher for autographs in the top of the ninth inning.

An eyewitness said Swisher “was livid” upon hearing the request. When Jeter was later asked if such incident had ever happened before, he simply answered “What do you think?”

Baltimore media later reported that the Maryland state police are investigating the case.

Despite the late game incident, the Yankees pulled away with a 7-2 victory over the Orioles.

한 목격자는 “스위셔의 얼굴이 납빛으로 굳어졌다”고 했다. 지터는 과거에도 이 런 일이 있었느냐는 질문에 “어떻다고 생각해요?(What do you think?)”라고 되물으며 황당해했다.

지터와 스위셔는 고개를 저어 사인 요청을 거부했지만, 한 경찰관은 9회초 러셀 마틴의 타석 때 화장실로 향하는 지터의 뒤를 쫓아가면서까지 사인을 요구한 것으로 전해졌다.

양키스는 9회초에 선두타자 마틴의 솔로포를 포함해 5안타를 집중시켜 5점을 뽑 아내며 7-2로 이겨 서전을 승리로 장식했다.

미국 야후스포츠는 팬들의 사인요청에 시달리는 메이저리그 스타라 해도 9회에 더그아웃에서만큼은 사인을 기대해선 안 된다고 꼬집었다.
