The Navy scoured waters off South Korea‘s east coast following a citizen’s report of an object that appeared to be a submarine, but the search turned up nothing unusual, officials said.

A 39-year-old tourist reported to authorities he saw a strange object emerging and then disappearing in waters some 500 meters away from the Gyeongpodae beach in Gangneung, about 240 kilometers east of Seoul, around 6:20 a.m. while taking pictures of the sun rising.

The Navy immediately sent an anti-submarine vessel, a PC-3 patrol aircraft and a Linx helicopter to search the area, but no unusual object was located, a military official said.

“The Navy and the Coast Guard are continuing their search on and off shore,” the official said.

The tourist reported that an unidentified object in a picture taken with his mobile phone camera looked like a submarine and the military is examining the photo, the official said, adding the chance of it being an actual submarine appear low.

Gangneung is where a North Korean submarine was found stranded in 1996. That triggered a massive manhunt for 25 North Korean sailors and agents who came ashore after abandoning their disabled submarine.

Most were shot and killed though a few were believed to have made it back to the North. (Yonhap News)

해군, 동해 ‘수상한 물체’ 긴급 수색!


강원 강릉시 경포 해변 인근 해상에서 2일 오전 잠수정으로 추정되는 물체가 발견됐다는 신고가 접수돼 해군과 해경 등이 긴급 수색에 나섰다.

신고자 서모(39)씨는 “경포 해변에서 일출 사진을 촬영하던 중 이상한 물체가 목격됐다가 사라졌다”고 말했다.

군 당국은 서씨의 신고 직후 함정과 항공기 등을 긴급 투입한 수색을 실시했으나 특이 사항을 발견하지 못했다고 밝혔다.

군 관계자는 “대잠함정과 해상초계기(PC-3), 링스헬기 등을 이용해 해상 정찰을 실시했으나 현재까지 특이 사항은 없다”며 “군과 해경이 지상과 해상에서 계속 수색, 정찰을 벌이고 있다”고 말했다.

그는 “오늘 오전 6시30분 한 관광객이 휴대전화로 찍은 물체가 잠수함과 유사하다는 내용으로 신고했고 해당 사진을 분석하고 있다”며 “진짜 잠수함인지에 대해 정보 분석하는 쪽에서는 다르게 보고 있다”고 전했다.

그는 “신고자는 해상 500ｍ 앞에 이상 물체가 있는 것으로 신고했다”며 “신고를 받자마자 해상 정찰을 실시했으며 근해에 해군 함정이 있었다”고 설명했다.
