A high school dropout stormed into a class in an elementary school in southern Seoul on Friday and threw around a shovel, wounding six children, the police said. 

The 18-year-old, surnamed Kim, broke into the school compound in Bangbae-dong at 11:50 a.m. and allegedly hit children who were taking a morning class with a toy gun and a shovel, a rampage that lasted for five minutes. 

Six elementary school students were wounded and taken to a nearby hospital to receive treatment. 

The suspect, who is said to be suffering from depression, has been arrested and the police are now investigating the motive behind the violent act.

10대가 초등학교에 난입, 흉기 휘둘러!

중퇴생이 수업 중인 초등학교 교실에 들어가 흉기를 휘둘러 학생들이 다치는 사건이 발생했다.

서울 방배경찰서는 28일 서울 강남의 유명 사립 초등학교 교실에서 흉기를 휘둘러 학생들을 다치게 한 혐의(폭력행위 등 처벌에 관한 법률 위반)로 김모(18)군을 붙잡아 조사하고 있다.

김군은 이날 오전 11시50분께 A초등학교 교실에 들어가 수업 중이던 학생들에게 흉기를 휘둘러 여학생 3명과 남학생 3명 등 6명을 다치게 한 혐의를 받고 있다.

학생들은 입술이 찢어지는 등 상처를 입고 인근 병원으로 옮겨졌다.

김군은 야전삽과 장난감 총 등을 들고 4교시 수업 중이던 교실에 들어갔으며 5분가량 가져간 흉기를 휘두르다 옆반 남자 교사에게 제압당했다.

경찰은 김군이 인천에 있는 한 고등학교를 중퇴하고 검정고시에 합격한 상태라고 전했다.

김군은 작년 3월말부터 4월초까지 인천의 한 신경정신과 병원 폐쇄병동에서 2주 간 치료받은 경력이 있는 등 우울증 치료를 받았던 것으로 알려졌다.

경찰은 정확한 범행 동기와 경위 등을 조사하고 있다.
