A Washington man says he ordered a flat-screen television through Amazon.com and instead received a military-style assault rifle.

Seth Horvitz, 38, a musician from San Francisco who moved to Washington a year ago, told The Washington Post he was alone getting ready for a dinner party at his Brookland apartment when he heard a knock at the door. A UPS man had left a package outside.

He had ordered the TV set for $324 from a third-party seller through Amazon. He told the Post he thought the package might be TV accessories.

But Horvitz got a surprise when he opened the package and found a “tactical military-style SIG716 semiautomatic rifle ... with an empty magazine for 7.62x51mm ammunition” and an owner‘s manual from German arms company Sig Sauer, the Post said.

Horvitz, who said he’s never handled a weapon before, said an invoice with the gun showed it was meant to be sent to a Pennsylvania gun shop. Horvitz and his guests had their dinner party, looking at and discussing the assault rifle.

The Post said he called police, who came by a week later and drove off with the weapon.

“I definitely knew it was a mistake,” Horvitz told the Post. “But I was confused as to how that kind of mix-up could happen. Especially given the recent events, the recent shootings. It surprised me to see how easy it would be for a gun to show up on someone‘s doorstep -- not just a gun, but an assault weapon.”

The Post said Amazon did not respond to calls for comment. Horvitz said he still wants his TV. (UPI)

홀비츠가 본래 주문한 물품은 평면 티비로, 아마존을 통해 제 삼자에게서 324불에 구입했다. 그는 그 소포를 보았을 때 텔레비전에 필요한 부품일 것이라고 생각했다.

하지만 그 소포를 뜯었을 때 그는 “군용 SIG716 반자동 소총과 7.62x51mm위 탄알을 위한 탄창”을 발견하고는 적잖이 놀랐다. 이와 함께 발송인인 독일의 한 총기 회사가 보낸 설명서도 들어있었다.

한 번도 총기를 사용해 본 적이 없는 홀비츠는 저녁 모임에 온 사람들과 함께 총에 대해 의논하다가, 경찰에 전화했다.

소포의 본래 수신인은 펜실베니아의 총포상이었다. 홀비츠는 “무언가 실수가 있다는 것은 알앗지만, 어떻게 이렇게 혼동을 할 수 있는지 모르겠다”며 “특히 이전 콜로라도 총기 난사 사건과 관련하여, 이러한 살상 무기를 손에 넣는 것이 이렇게 쉽다는 것이 놀라울 따름”이라고 말했다.

아마존은 이 사건에 대한 대답을 회피하고 있다.
