15,000 job applications in 10 years… still no job

Desperate jobseeker in the United Kingdom has resorted to begging for a job in the streets after being rejected 15,000 times in the past 10 years, according to news reports.

Robin Norton, who reportedly has a masters degree in history along with several National Vocational Qualifications, walks down a road wearing a sandwich board that says “Hire me, plese?!”

“Wearing the sign is a last-ditch attempt for me to get work,” says 40-year-old Norton. He says he is willing to work at any full-time job.

Norton used to work in various jobs until 2002, when his foot-care business took a turn for the worse. Since then, he has worked in gardening, cleaning, and building work but has failed to find a full-time job.

He says the recession, coupled with his age, has hindered him from finding a job.

The latest statistics show unemployment in the U.K. now stands at 2.63 million, falling by 45,000 in the three months to March this year.

로버트 노튼(40)씨는 석사 학위와 다양한 국가 공인 자격증을 갖고 있지만 2002년 이후 정규직을 얻는데 계속 실패해왔다.

다급해진 노튼 씨는 결국 “제발 저를 고용해주세요”란 광고판을 메고 길거리를 걷기 시작했다.

“취직하기 위한 최후의 시도인 셈입니다”라고 노튼 씨는 말했다. 그는 어느 직종이라도 좋으니 일하고 싶다고 말했다.

그는 최근의 경기불황과 더불어 자신의 많은 나이 때문에 자신이 취직하지 못하고 있다고 덧붙였다.

최근 통계에 따르면 영국 내의 실업자 수는 263만에 달한다고 한다.
