Female assassin suspected of 20 killings

Maria Jimenez, 26, was arrested by police in Monterrey, Mexico, Monday on charges of 20 murders for the drug cartel Zetas, according to news reports.

Jimenez confessed to the killings and other crimes, and will be charged for murder, theft, and kidnapping, an official said.

She was reportedly paid about $1,700 per month to carry out the killings. Her victims include rival drug traffickers and a police officer, said Jorge Domene, spokesman for the state prosecutors in Nuevo Leon.

Mexican police have arrested other female assassins but few have been suspected of so many killings.

Over 50,000 drug-related killings took place in Mexico since President Felipe Calderon announced a national offensive against the cartels upon taking office in December 2006.

마리아 히메네스(여.26)는 마약밀매 카르텔 세타스로 부터 매월 1천700달러를 받고 경쟁관계에 있는 마약밀매 조직원들과 경찰을 암살했다고 몬테리이를 관할하는 뉴에보 레온 주의 검찰이 발표했다.

당국은 지난주에 체포된 히메네스가 살인 등 범죄 사실을 시인했다고 밝히면서 그가 살인, 차량 절도, 유괴 등의 혐의로 기소될 것이라고 말했다.

여자 살인범이 구속된 적은 있으나 이처럼 많은 살인을 저지른 여자 피의자는 멕시코에서 처음이다.

히메네스가 속해있는 조직은 몬테레이 시내 14개 지점에서 마약을 밀매해 온 것으로 확인되고 있다.

2006년 12월 펠리페 칼데론 대통령 취임 당시 마약밀매 카르텔과의 전쟁을 선포한 이래로 마약 조직 관련 살인 사건이 50,000건이 넘도록 속출하고 있다.
