KIST develops sound-sensitive security camera

Korean researchers have developed a new type of security camera capable of distinguishing sounds including human screams and explosions.

When the camera detects a sound it turns toward the origin of the sound.

Currently undergoing outdoor testing, the camera was developed by a team at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology, led by principal researcher Choi Jong-suk.

“(The team) speeded up the process of completing the technology due to the recent crimes that took place here,” Choi said.

Choi also said that the team would work with the industry to develop commercial products equipped with the technologies.

The camera is fitted with an automatic sound detection system that enables it to detect sounds that are louder than the normal background noise.

The security camera is also capable of distinguishing eight different sounds including screaming, the sound of a window breaking, explosions and the sound of a closing door.

소리가 나는 방향으로 카메라를 돌려 화면을 전송하는 CCTV가 개발돼 범인 추적과 강력범죄 예방에 큰 도움이 될 전망이다.

한국과학기술연구원(KIST) 바이오닉스연구단 최종석 박사팀은 시끄러운 환경에서도 비명소리와 폭발음 등을 구별해 감지하는 기술을 개발, CCTV에 접목했다고 26일 밝혔다.

이번에 접목한 청각기능의 핵심 기술은 크게 세 가지다.

먼저 주위 소음보다 더 큰 소리가 들려왔을 때 반응하도록 하는 소리발생자동검지(ASD) 기술을 담았다.

연구팀은 이렇게 감지한 소리를 음원분류(SSC) 기술을 통해 사람 비명소리, 유리창 깨지는 소리, 폭발음, 문 닫히는 소리 등 보안에 관련된 8가지 소리로 구분할 수 있게 만들었다.

이때 소리 인식의 오류를 최소화하기 위해 음원방향검지(SSL) 기술을 더했다.

소리가 전달되는 과정에서 주변 물체에 반사될 때의 반향음에서 수평각과 고도각을 맞추는 과정이다.

연구팀은 청각기능을 갖춘 CCTV를 상용화하기 위해 최근 실외환경에서 시험 중이다.
