The minority Unified Progressive Party decided Tuesday to simplify its name to the Progressive Party as it seeks to sharpen its leftist identity.
The party announced the draft revision of its constitution that included the name change.
The name “Progressive Party” had been registered with the National Election Commission as the official abbreviation of another leftist minority party, the New Progressive Party.
The NPP, however, was delisted after it failed to get 2 percent of the vote in this month’s parliamentary elections. The percentage is the minimum legal requisite for a political party to maintain its registration with the NEC.
“It has been agreed that the temporary description ‘unified’ would be eliminated once the party confirms its position as the leading progressive party,” said a party official.
Related discussions are under way as some called for an additional description in order to differentiate the party from overseas liberal parties, he added.
The revised party constitution and regulations are to be approved in the party’s central committee meeting on May 13.
The party pledged to maintain its North Korean policies, which raised pro-communist allegations during the election campaign.
The UPP was launched late last year, upon the merger of the Democratic Labor Party, People’s Participation Party and a nascent party split from the NPP.
