The Furey Foundation is to hold its seventh Jeju Island beach volleyball tournament weekend on May 19.
The charitable group was set up in 2009 in memory of English teacher Nathan Furey, who died while living on the island in what is thought to have been a sudden case of encephalitis.
The foundation has already raised more than 20 million won ($18,000), which has been donated to Nathan’s two sons’ post-secondary education, and also to low-income families on the island.
Organizers are inviting people to travel from all over Korea for the latest sports event that will run from 7 a.m. on May 19 to 7 p.m. on May 20 on Jeju’s Iho beach.
All volleyball players registering and paying by May 1 will get a discounted rate of 40,000 won per person (240,000 won per team) entry fee. All teams will be guaranteed six volleyball games on the Saturday and four on the Sunday.
Those who do not have a complete team are also welcome to contact the organizers to get placed in a full team. All teams should have six players and include a mix of men and women.
To register, e-mail jejufurey@gmail.com listing the team name, player’s names, captain’s phone number and e-mail address, team members’ T-shirt sizes and if any are vegetarians.
