International high-IQ society Mensa said it has accepted a 4-year-old British girl whose IQ is only 1 point less than that of physicist Stephen Hawking.
John Stevenage, chief executive of British Mensa, said the organization was proud to welcome Heidi Hankins of Winchester, England, into its ranks after she scored a 159 on an IQ test, putting her just 1 point behind fellow Mensa member Hawking's 160 IQ, The Sun reported Thursday.
Matthew Hankins, 46, the girl's father, said he and his wife knew early on that their daughter was special.
“We always thought Heidi was bright because she was reading early,” Hankins said. “I was curious about her IQ and the results were off the scale. I got her the complete set of the Oxford Reading Tree books when she was 2 and she read through the whole set of 30 in about an hour. It's what you would expect a 7-year-old to do. She was making noises and trying to talk literally since she was born and by age 1 her vocabulary was quite good. Now it is really good.” (UPI)

영국에 사는 4세 소녀 하이디 한킨스(Heidi Hankins)는 지능검사 결과 아이큐가 159로 드러났다. 스티븐 호킹과 아인슈타인의 아이큐(160)와 거의 흡사하다.
하이디는 생후 14개월 때 묘사가 뛰어난 동물•사람 그림을 그렸고, 18개월에는 컴퓨터를 이용해 스스로 글을 찾고 읽기 시작했다고 한다.
입을 떼고 말을 처음 시작할 때부터 거의 완벽한 문장을 구사했으며, 두 살 때에는 7살 아이들과 같은 수준의 공부를 할 수 있었다.
최근에는 전 세계 수재들의 모임인 멘사(Mensa) 최연소 회원으로 등록해 화제가 되기도 했다.
하이디의 아버지인 매튜 한킨스(47) 영국 사우스햄튼대학 교수는 “아이가 글을 일찍 깨우치는 것을 보고 남다르다고 느꼈다.”면서 “예술가인 하이디 어머니의 영향을 받아 섬세한 그림을 그리는 것 역시 뛰어났다.”고 말했다.
이어 “오는 9월 조기 입학이 가능하다는 통지를 받아 학교에 갈 준비를 하고 있다.”고 덧붙였다.
하이디의 어머니는 “남다른 지능을 가졌지만 아직은 또래들처럼 인형이나 레고를 가지고 노는 것을 좋아하는 어린 아이”라고 말했다.
