Brazil court OKs abortions for brainless fetuses

BRASILIA, Brazil (AP) -- Brazil's supreme court has voted to authorize abortions in cases of fetuses with no brains.

Abortion is illegal in Brazil except when a pregnancy threatens the life of the mother and in cases of rape. The Supreme Federal Tribunal's 8-2 vote Thursday now decriminalizes abortions involving anencephalic fetuses.

Such fetuses develop without brains and cannot survive outside the womb for more than a few minutes. Most die before birth. Brazil has a high rate of such cases, with 10 out of every 10,000 pregnancies.

Brazil is the world's most populous Roman Catholic country and religious groups staged vigils outside the court and in other cities opposing a ruling to allow such abortions.

브라질 헌법재판소가 12일(현지시간) 다수 의견으로 무뇌아(신경관 결손 태아) 낙태를 합법적인 행위로 인정했다.

브라질 헌재는 전체 11명의 재판관 가운데 10명이 참석한 가운데 전날부터 이틀 간 시행한 표결에서 찬성 8표, 반대 2표로 무뇌아 낙태를 합법화했다고 밝혔다.

헌재 관계자는 "무뇌아 판정을 받고 나서 임신 상태를 유지할 것인지, 아니면 낙태를 선택할지는 임산부가 결정할 사안"이라면서 "낙태를 택하더라도 범죄가 되지 는 않는다는 해석"이라고 말했다.

브라질에서는 임산부의 생명이 위험하거나 성폭행에 의한 임신에 한해 낙태를 허용하고 있다. 헌재의 이번 결정으로 낙태 허용 범위가 늘어난 셈이다.

헌재의 표결에 앞서 가톨릭계와 인권단체들은 "무뇌아도 엄연히 생명체"라며 낙 태 반대 캠페인을 벌여왔다.

무뇌아 낙태 반대 캠페인을 주도해온 변호사 마리아 안젤리카 데 올리베이라 파 리아스는 "피로 더럽혀진 법관들을 더는 존중하지 않을 것"이라며 헌재의 결정을 강 력하게 비난했다.
