S. Korean game addict accused of killing baby

A South Korean woman has been detained for killing her baby who was born while she was playing online games, police said Thursday.

They said the 26-year-old gave birth while at an Internet cafe in Seoul on March 25. She allegedly put the infant in a plastic bag, sealed it and dumped it in a nearby parking lot.

The woman had visited Internet cafes almost daily, police said.

"She was playing games until right before she gave birth in the cafe's bathroom," a police spokesman in the city's Songpa district told AFP.

"She didn't even know her waters had broken."

Police said the woman was being held in a state nursing facility and would face trial for infanticide.

There have been other reports of deaths related to Internet game addiction in South Korea, one of the world's most wired societies.

In 2010 a mother killed her three-year-old son while she was tired from Internet game-playing. Also in 2010, a 15-year-old boy committed suicide after killing his mother for scolding him over excessive playing of computer games.

A 41-year-old man was sentenced to two years in prison in the same year after he and his wife left their baby daughter to die at home of malnutrition while they were in Internet cafes.

Official figures estimate there are two million Internet addicts.

The government has adopted a "Cinderella" law to ban youngsters from playing online games past midnight as concern grows about Internet addiction. (AP)

서울 송파경찰서는 PC방에서 게임을 하다 낳은 아기를 비닐봉지에 넣어 숨지게 하고 유기한 혐의(영아살해 등)로 A(26ㆍ여)씨를 검거했다고 5일 밝혔다.

A씨는 지난달 25일 오전 9시25분께 송파구 모 PC방에서 게임을 하다가 진통을 느껴 화장실에서 남자아기를 낳은뒤 검은 비닐봉지에 영아를 넣어 입구를 막은 채로 PC방 건물 주차장 옆 화단에 버려 숨지게 한 혐의를 받고 있다.

A씨는 지난 1월부터 출산한 날까지 송파구 내 PC방 여러 군데를 돌아다니며 온종일 게임만 했던 것으로 밝혀졌다.

경찰 관계자는 "A씨는 출산직전까지 게임을 할 정도로 중독이었다"며 "게임하는 동안 양수가 터졌는지도 모를 정도였다"고 말했다.

A씨는 아이를 낳아서 기를 방도가 없다고 생각해 범행을 저지른 것으로 조사됐다고 경찰은 전했다.

A씨가 버린 영아의 사체는 이틀 뒤인 27일 오후 1시께 근처 음식물 쓰레기 통에 서 발견됐다.

영아가 든 검은 비닐봉지를 26일 청소부가 음식물 쓰레기통에 넣은 것을 CCTV를 통해 확인했다고 경찰은 설명했다.

A씨는 인터넷 채팅 중에 만난 남자와 동거를 하다 아기를 가졌으나 지난해 12월 임신 사실을 안 동거남이 '헤어지자'고 요구해 PC방 등을 떠돈 것으로 드러났다.

편의점이나 식당 아르바이트를 전전하던 A씨는 인터넷 게임에서 만난 상대에게 "배고픈데 돈 좀 보내달라"고 해 3만~5만원씩 받아 게임비와 식비를 충당해온 것으로 조사됐다.

경찰 관계자는 "A씨는 부모와도 연락이 되지 않는 등 불우한 환경에서 무관심과 냉대를 받았다"며 "임신하고 병원진료도 받지 못해 건강이 악화된 상태"라고 말했다.
