100-year-old light bulb still works

GE Lighting said a 100-year-old light bulb from a time capsule uncovered at its Nela Park facility in Ohio still shines.

The company said the time capsule containing five incandescent light bulbs was unearthed Monday as part of the run-up to the East Cleveland facility's 100th anniversary celebrations in April 2013. It was discovered one of the 40-watt bulbs still glowed when inserted into a special socket, The (Cleveland) Plain Dealer reported Tuesday.

The time capsule, a lead box in the cornerstone of one of Nela Park's original buildings, also contained photos of Nela Park's founders, journals, a book of technical specifications, and a 100-year-old edition of The Plain Dealer.

Nela Park, thought to be one of the country's first industrial parks, was founded as a research facility for General Electric and still houses more than 700 employees working to further the advances of GE Lighting. (UPI)

미국의 전구 회사 GE(제네럴 일렉트릭: General Electric) 라이팅 사가 타입 캡슐에서 찾아낸 100년된 전구가 아직도 작동한다고 UPI통신이 28일 보도했다.

이 회사는 2013년 4월에 열릴 예정인 동(東) 클리블랜드 시설의 100년 기념 행사의 일부로서 타입 캡슐을 열어 백열 전구 다섯 개를 꺼냈는데, 그 중에서 40와트 전구 하나가 특별한 소켓에 삽입했을 때 빛을 발한 것이다.

클리블랜드 넬라 공업단지의 주춧돌 중 하나에 들어 있었던 이 타임캡슐 안에는 넬라 단지의 창립자들의 사진과 일기, 기술규격서와 함께 클리블랜드의 플레인 딜러 일간지의 백년 전 판이 들어있었다.

미국에서 가장 먼저 형성된 공업단지 중 하나인 넬라 단지는 제네럴 일렉트릭 사의 연구 시설로서 세워졌으며 아직도 GE 라이팅의 근로자 700명 이상이 근무하고 있다.
