Former comedian and TV show host Kang Ho-dong will start a special project in southern Sudan to help vulnerable children in the African country.
According to ChildFund Korea, which is in charge of Kang’s Sudan project, the former comedian has been supporting a Korean child through the organization since 2005. Kang is said to have decided to start the project in Africa, as he recently became interested in supporting children overseas as well.
The new project consists of building a special village in southern Sudan, which will be devoted to providing education and medical services specifically for the region’s local children. The village will be called “Kang Ho-dong Village,” and Kang will be helping a total of eight overseas children in addition to the village project.
Kang indefinitely withdrew from the entertainment industry last September after being involved in a tax evasion controversy.

수단에 ‘강호동 마을’ 생긴다
방송인 강호동이 아프리카 남수단 어린이 돕기에 나선다.
22일 '초록우산 어린이 재단'에 따르면 강호동은 학교 건립•의료 지원•자전거 등 교통수단 지원 등을 통해 남수단 어린이를 돕고 싶다는 뜻을 올해 초 밝혔다.
강호동은 이 재단의 '씨름 꿈나무 지원' 후원 프로그램에 따라 지난 2005년부터 '천하장사'를 꿈꾸는 조손 남자 아동을 후원해 왔다고 재단은 전했다.
재단 관계자는 "(강호동이) 원래 국내 쪽으로 도움을 주고 싶어했지만 재단이 남수단에 사업을 시작하면서 해외에도 관심을 돌리게 됐다"며 "사업의 규모•방법• 이름 등 구체적으로 나온 것은 없다. 아이디어 차원에서 지원 의사를 밝힌 것"이라 고 말했다.
강호동은 강원도 평창 투기 논란이 불거지자 지난해 9월 잠정 은퇴를 선언했으며 올해 문제가 된 평창 땅을 서울아산병원 사회복지재단에 기부한 바 있다.
